In 1937, W.R. “Red” Butt moved to Brownstown and purchased the former Brock’s Pharmacy at 1052 W Spring St. in Ewing and reopened it as Twin Town Drug.
In 1960, Red’s daughter Sally Butt Banks, RPh., and her husband Jerry Banks, RPh, joined Mr. Butt in the family business.
In 1962, the expansion of the business. Emerson Drug located at 100 S. Main St. in Brownstown, was purchased by the Butt family and renamed Brownstown Pharmacy. Elba “Pokey” Miranda, a pharmacist, joined the firm at this time.
In 1967, Red’s son, Jim Butt, RPh, became the final member of the family to join the business as a pharmacist.
Family Drug was first born in 1982, when Family Drug, Inc was incorporated as the parent company of Twin Town Drug and Brownstown Pharmacy. In April 1988, W.R. Butt died unexpectedly and ownership of the business was transferred to Sally Banks and Jim Butt. Continued growth and success led in 1989 to formulation of a plan to merge the two pharmacies into a single location. This dream became a reality in December of 1991 with the opening of the current Brownstown store Family Drug, at 810 W. Commerce St.
1994 brought a shift in ownership as Jim Butt became sole owner of Family Drug with the retirement of Sally and Jerry Banks. Also, Tony Stuckwisch, RPh joined the Family Drug staff.
A renovation and enlargement of the store was completed in 1996 to bring the store to its current state.
January 2000 saw the return of Sally Banks as she came back to work full time as a staff pharmacist until the time of her death in 2006.
Scott Butt joined the Family Drug team in November of 2001. He came on board to initiate the Convacare home medical equipment division of the store.
In 2006 Family Drug hired 2 new pharmacists, Julie Branaman, PharmD and Gina Maupin, RPh.
In 2007 Family Drug added pharmaceutical compounding to its extensive list of services. The compounding business has been a great niche for Family Drug and has provided many valuable medications to the Jackson county community and doctors.
On January 3, 2009 Jim Butt retired. Julie Branaman became pharmacist in charge and Gina Maupin continued as staff pharmacist. Tony Stuckwisch also came back to Family Drug as a part-time staff pharmacist. Jim’s retirement also brought a shift in leadership for the store when Scott Butt took over the store manager’s role.
Family Drug’s continued success brought on a need for more pharmacists so in 2010 Misty Royalty, PharmD joined the team as a part-time staff pharmacist. Gina Maupin moved away in 2011 and Family Drug hired a new full time pharmacist, Benjamin Neuenschwander, PharmD.
Benjamin moved back to his hometown in 2015 and Family Drug filled his position with Laura Bunte, PharmD in the fall of 2015.
In 2016, Amy Persons, PharmD joined our team as a part- time pharmacist.
In 2018, we hired on two full-time pharmacists right out of Butler- Jacob Brown, PharmD and Sarah Fromer, PharmD. Jake had interned for us for several years prior.
Family Drug Inc. continued to expand and we opened a new location in Seymour in December of 2018.
In 2020, the pandemic led to the retirement of our part-time pharmacist, Misty Royalty and Amy Persons accepted a new job. Erin Rayburn, PharmD, then joined our team as a full-time pharmacist.
In 2021, Erin Rayburn accepted a new position and we welcomed back Amy Persons as a full-time pharmacist.
In 2019, Sam Butt, son of Scott Butt & Trish Butt and grandson of Jim & Darlene Butt, joined the Family Drug Team.
In 2023, Sally Cate Lawson, granddaughter of Jerry & Sally Banks, joined the Family Drug Team.
